ESSOSA

Essosa is a soulful sensation from the UK that emerged into my sights on TikTok with her hit song ‘Waste My Time’.

I was initially confused about how I hadn’t heard this song before, as it sounded like a classic R&B song from the ‘90s. So to discover this was a song from 2022 I was ecstatic because that implies REAL music is back. The essence of the era she took inspiration from shines exceptionally well with the help of her producer Sunsetdrver who encapsulated the mysterious, melancholy vibes of a timeless 90s R&B song accompanied by Essosa’s passionate delivery.

Waste My Time’ is a heartfelt recounting of Essosa’s turbulent, headache-inducing experiences with a man who wants to simply waste her time. She acknowledges it for what it is but still struggles to understand why he insists on keeping her around if he doesn’t want her. The song resonated with many and this is a contributing fact as to why I felt so called to listen, because it felt like who is this girl and how does she just get it?

This is what Essosa is about, she eloquently captures experiences we are all so familiar with and conveys them with so much warmth, so much so that you feel safe knowing it’s not just you. We see this in earlier tracks like ‘Butterflies’ where she states “I don't know where your heads at ” which is eerily similar to that compelling premonition of limbo. A tribute to those dynamics in which you feel conflicted, are you in? or are you out? Is it sustainable? Or is it just temporary?

Luckily for us, Essosa has an EP named ‘Dreamworld’ that was released in 2021 along with previous singles such as ‘Memory’ , ‘Belong’, ‘Lemonade’ and ‘Butterflies’, where you can visually see how much she has creatively as well as emotionally grown. I find it inspiring how consistent she has been with putting her heart on the line as it shows conviction to her craft, as well as how self-assured she is, in knowing she too isn’t alone in these experiences, most experiences are universal and I feel that her music truly captures the sense of knowing everything is going to be okay as long as you feel and accept it to be what it is.

‘Waste My Time’ getting its spotlight now means we’re now exposed to all the previous heartfelt projects she created, that we can now indulge in as experiences are timeless! The star has been working hard on her craft and I love that she now has several eyes on her that will continue on this journey of growth with her.

You should listen to Essosa if you’re on the lookout for rising artists with the capabilities to apply personal experiences to their craft as a sacrifice for the listener. Essosa is on the right path toward creating greatness that lasts forever.

“where did you come from baby ?”
