Summer Banton

I

Summer Banton, the emerging artist coming straight out of south London is bringing a nostalgic essence of R&B to the music world. Summer has glistened onto the scene with a young, well-adapted perspective of R&B that incorporates afro beats, garage, and trap. She is still finding her sound as she works out which is the sound that works best for her, but this doesn’t mean to say she doesn’t already have solid bodies of work so far. I first came across Summer on Tiktok, I was just scrolling when I came across captivating visuals of Summer and several dancers, my first initial thought was this looks like an old R&B music video. It sounds like something I would hear Misteeq make. I was instantly sold. ‘Be My Guest’ is the perfect starting point for Summer’s music because it’s the song that propelled her into the watchful eyes of many, who then delved into her previous work. With songs such as ‘Miss Me’ we see how effortlessly she can create melodic catchy hooks that make you bop your head along as you ponder about an old flame. Just as Summer is sweet, refreshing, and vibrant, Summer Banton also appears as such but this comes with a catch. Summer displays the ability to truly convey her feelings in a cutthroat manner that sounds so sweet. ‘Be My Guest’ shows exactly how capable of communicating she is able to do versus the person in question, who seems to be wasting time and weaving through invisible obstacles instead of facing up to the predicament they initially placed themselves in. She states “ If you wanna leave then be my guest, you’re wasting time”, she acknowledges that this person is avoiding acting on their feelings “ tired of you talking with those same old indirect”. She isn’t begging to be wanted or cared for she simply wants clear communication and intention which she isn’t receiving. These small factors of how Summer articulates herself are a clear indication to me that she is embodying the ‘00s’ R&B girlie incredibly well. When we look back at Destiny’s Child discographies a lot of their songs favour the same energy of not enabling cowardice or the bare minimum.

I am incredibly excited for what Summer does as the songs she has so far are incredible pieces of work.
