Natanya
Natanya is an emerging artist hailing from London, who just last year received a GUAP award for Best New Artist. Natanya brings a breath of fresh air to the music scene with experimental production and passionate vocals. I first came across Natanya on Twitter with the catchy song ‘23’ it captured my attention almost instantly. Just from this snippet alone I was hooked on what Natanya was bringing to the table because she so blatantly was born to be an entertainer, with her self-assured dancing capabilities alongside her true dedication to the vibe of the song she was sharing. After realizing ‘23’ wasn’t yet out, I decided to delve into her later work and was pleasantly surprised with how talented an artist in their early stages was. As well as being incredibly vocally talented, Natanya is also multifaceted and has the ability to produce songs which I feel is another factor as to what drew me to her, you cannot categorize her music solely because it’s truly a unique experience. Listening to Natanya is a unique experience in which you can draw similarities to other genres/artists but it’ll never compare to the artistry Natanya is displaying. On earlier tracks such as ‘Foolish’ we can see how she incorporated many elements into this song, elements such as Neo-soul, Alternative R&B, and soul. The song touches on several messages addressing how she isn’t as foolish as she was assumed to be. She speaks on how she is completely aware of how she is being manipulated and that’s what gives her the leverage to understand she is the smarter person in this equation. She doesn’t address this song in a self-deprecative sense, she addresses it in a way to empathize with others who also may feel very inclined to stay in situations that don’t benefit them, because she knows she isn’t ‘Foolish’ there’s no reason you are either. Natanya has formidable writing abilities that draw people into her music as we can all empathize with being in such circumstances. For example with ‘23’, this is a song about not being old enough for the person in her sights and almost being belittled by her age. Now in hindsight, she is aware that a gap in age could be problematic in some senses but she isn’t afraid to express her desire to fulfill her naive ideals, or more so let us see how naive she used to be. Natanya is incredibly gifted at uncovering the layers of her experiences and articulate them in a soulful expressive way. In her most recent song ‘Everybody’s Gotta Learn sometimes’ which can be found on her EP ‘Sorrow At Sunrise’ we are immersed in a whole new world of sonic sounds, as she addresses the concept of wanting love from somebody so badly and having to accept that sometimes what you want isn’t always what’s best for you, hence everybody needing to learn sometimes. She expresses hurt and a sense of regret as she 'didn’t ask’ for this connection to occur yet “you chased me first’. Despite this she isn’t displaying anger, across the EP we can see the stages of growth Natanya undergoes and this only proves to me that as Natanya grows more to understand herself we will also be blessed with more emotionally charged music. I am excited to see what Natanya does as she has a promising career ahead of her.
